EMILY HAMPER, pianist
Currently
based in Toronto, Emily Hamper has led an active international career for over
ten years. Noted for her musical sensitivity and attention to detail, she is
in high demand by many of Canada's top singers as a coach and collaborative
pianist. Recent appearances include a recital and broadcast for the CBC's
Music Around Us series, as well as performances at the San Francisco
Opera, Calgary Opera, and the Orford Festival. Her July 2005 performance of
Schumann's Dichterliebe at the Queensland Music Festival with baritone
Phillip Addis was hailed as "spell-binding" by the Brisbane Courier-Mail.
Ms. Hamper made her conducting debut on the faculty of the Banff Centre in the summer of 2006. Her first season as Music Director for the opera courses at Wilfrid Laurier University culminated in two sold-out performances of opera excerpts and led to a return engagement for the fall of 2006.
This season Ms. Hamper returned to the University of Toronto as guest coach for The Rape of Lucretia. In the summer of 2007 she will make her début at the Green Mountain Opera Festival in Vermont and the Toronto Summer Music Festival. She has previously held positions on the coaching staff at the University of Toronto's Opera Division, the International Opera Workshop in the Czech and Slovak Republics, Montreal Opera's Atelier Lyrique, and the Canadian Vocal Arts Institute under the leadership of Joan Dornemann. Many of her collaborations with Canadian singers have been broadcast on CBC Radio and Radio-Canada.
